Diagnosing & Screening Hydrocephalus Webinar Series

The Hydrocephalus Association would like to invite you to the Winter 2022 HANDS Webinar Series. The focus will be on improving ways of diagnosing and screening for hydrocephalus to allow for earlier detection of the condition. For more information on the series and how to register, please refer to the information below.

Please register for each webinar you would like to attend.

Webinar 1: Investigating surrogate measures of ICP in NPH

Speaker: Jefferson Chen, MD, Ph.D., University of California Irvine

Description:  Dr. Jefferson Chen studies the molecular mechanisms and biochemical underpinnings of the flow of fluids through the brain. His talk will focus on the use of waveform and surrogate measures of intracranial pressure (ICP) in treating patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).

Date: November 9th, 2022

Time:  10 am PT / 12 PM CT / 1 PM ET

Webinar 2: Utility of PCR and chromosomes for the diagnosis and pre-screening of hydrocephalus marker genes

Speaker: Joon “Simon” Shim, PhD, Marshall University

Description:  In order to develop a new diagnostic and drug-screening tool, Dr. Simon Shim’s lab has recently adopted the PCR and genome data viewer to compare human specimens and mammalian genes associated with hydrocephalus. In this Webinar, focusing on mRNA markers, Dr. Shim will demonstrate examples of how to potentially differentiate normal pressure hydrocephalus from Alzheimer’s disease. He will then demonstrate how two previously known factors associated with high mutation rates in human genomes can be applied to a genetic marker or drug target consistent or inconsistent across mouse, rat, and human species.

Date: November 14th, 2022

Time:  8 am PT / 10 AM CT / 11 AM ET

Webinar 3: Use of gait analysis in the diagnosis of Normal pressure hydrocephalus: new methods and pitfalls

Speaker: Mats Tullberg, MD, PhD, University of Gothenburg

Description:  In this webinar, Dr. Mats Tullberg will give an overview of current diagnostic methods and their limitations and describe the typical clinical syndrome of NPH with a focus on gait and balance and how careful evaluation of these symptoms and signs can assist in the diagnostic work-up of NPH. He will then present his research using a new method for 3D gait analysis to improve diagnostics in NPH and discuss important and interesting pitfalls.

Date: November 16th, 2022

Time:  7 am PT / 9 AM CT / 10 AM ET

Webinar 4: Natural Language Processing & Hydrocephalus

Speaker: Carolyn Quinsey, Ph.D. and Alice Woolard, BSc, Ph.D. Candidate, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Description:  Dr. Carolyn Quinsey and her Ph.D. student, Ms. Alice Woolard, will be discussing their work on natural language processing for the development of screening & diagnostic tools for hydrocephalus. More info coming soon.

Date: November 28th, 2022

Time:  2 pm PT / 4 PM CT / 5 PM ET

Webinar 5: Inflammation and brain injury in post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus

Speaker: Brandon Miller, MD, PhD, McGovern Medical School at University of Texas Health

Description: Dr. Miller is a pediatric neurosurgeon at UTHealth. His research focuses on developing new treatments for intraventricular hemorrhage and hydrocephalus. His talk will focus on brain injury in PHH.

Date: December 1st, 2022

Time:  8 am PT / 10 AM CT / 11 AM ET

Webinar 6: Integrated analysis of genome sequencing, exome sequencing, and transcriptome profiling in congenital hydrocephalus

Speaker: Sheng Chih “Peter” Jin, PhD, Washington University School of Medicine

Description: Congenital hydrocephalus (CH) is a genetically heterogeneous disease with hundreds of estimated risk genes; however, the causes of most CH patients remain elusive. In this webinar, Dr. Jin will present our recent studies that integrate multiple modalities of patient data, including genomics, transcriptomics, epigenomics, and phenomics, to discover novel genetic causes of CH.

Date: December 7th, 2022

Time:  1 pm PT / 3 PM CT / 4 PM ET

Webinar 7: Fetal HC Diagnosis & Screening

Speaker:  Gregory Heuer, MD, PhD and Tracy Flanders, MD, Children’s Hospital of Philidelphia

Description: This talk will focus on congenital hydrocephalus, specifically the diagnosing and screening of neonatal and fetal. Drs. Heuers and Flanders are the Directors for Prenatal and Neonatal Neurosurgery at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Department of Neurosurgery

Date: December 16th, 2022
