Research focus:

We are investigating developmental and cell biological aspects of multi ciliated cells that are lining the ventricular surface and are crucially important for the transport of cerebrospinal fluid. We have recently identified a regulator protein, namely Cyclin O (Ccno), that is required for the proper formation of multiciliated cell types. Mice mutant for Ccno develop severe hydrocephalus in addition to clinical features of primary ciliary dyskineasia (PCD). Importantly, human individuals with homozygous mutations of CCNO show severe PCD and hydrocephalus susceptibility.
We are further investigating the functions of Ccno in mouse to identify control mechanisms for the generation of multiciliated cells, which are potentially pharmaceutically approachable via the downstream targets of Ccno, namely cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs).
