Research focus:

Disrupted homeostasis occurs in many brain cell types in response to hydrocephalus, inducing expression of damaging factors and impairing the injury response that could otherwise aid to restore brain health. My research has focused on a “sentinel” factor, augurin/Ecrg4, that is highly expressed by the choroid plexus and quickly shed as a “panic” factor into CSF in brain injury states. Targeting such factors could potentially decrease a persistently injured brain state in hydrocephalus. My hopes for future research include development of high throughput assays for screening potential small molecule modulators that can maintain the health of cells that are affected in hydrocephalus. Ultimately, finding drugs that can decrease brain inflammation and disease states in hydrocephalus can hopefully decrease the number of surgeries patients endure.
