Research focus:

Over the past 20 years we have identified, and have been studying a unique cerebral folate handling system that is exquisitely sensitive to fluid drainage insufficiency. Any loss of drainage capacity leads to a decreased and ultimately failure to supply folate to the cerebral cortex. In developing fetuses we have further found that this system is sensitive to folic acid and can precipitate hydrocephalus in susceptible fetuses. In the last few years we have developed and are testing maternal supplements that by-pass the folate block and supply cortical cells directly, “fixing” the hydrocephalus and improving brain development.
