Research focus:

Intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) remains the most common neurologic complication of prematurity associated with demyelination and Hydrocephalus. Additionally, myelination failure in infants with IVH is ascribed to inflammation and oxidative stress, which induces maturational arrest of oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs). Activated microglia increasing mature oligodendrocyte survival and a major source of IGF-1 (Insulin-like growth factor-1). Moreover, depletion of IGF-1 selectively from microglia leads to impaired myelination. Therefore microglial IGF-1 may be a common regulator in IVH mediated oligodendrocytes dysfunction and myelin defects. Our goal is to investigate the role of microglial IGF-1 in hemoglobin mediated myelin dysregulation in hydrocephalus rat model.
