Research focus:

I am co-director of the Study on perinatal brain injury recovery and outcome (SPROUT) research collaborative at Kennedy Krieger Institute through which we have established a longitudinal research cohort that allows us to follow the natural history of the neurodevelopmental outcomes of both premature and term infants with perinatal brain injury. We are working to identify which blood, neuroimaging, electrographic and neurobehavioral examination biomarkers best predict short and long-term neurodevelopment and behavior associated with difficulties in daily living and academic success, specifically in the areas of motor, attention and language. We are also working with multi-disciplinary teams to examine potential interventions to mitigate early brain injury in these infants. I actively contribute my research expertise in the area of neurodevelopment to collaborations involving infants born preterm, infants born full-term who were asphyxiated and treated with hypothermia therapy, infants with hydrocephalus and infants with perinatal stroke. We are currently evaluating neuroimaging and neurobehavioral correlates of infants with post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus who require intervention and those that do not. We are following these infant to evaluate motor, cognitive and visual outcomes at 6 months and 1 year of age.
