Research focus:

The genetic basis of congenital hydrocephalus is currently not well understood, and development of pharmacological treatment is dependent on elucidating the underlying causes. My laboratory uses mouse models of motile ciliary dysfunction to identify the genetic and molecular causes of associated disorders, including congenital hydrocephalus. We have shown that the severity of hydrocephalus in these models is dependent on background strain, indicating that hydrocephalus susceptibility is driven by genetic modifiers. The presence of significant ciliary defects in the brains of our models on susceptible and non-susceptible backgrounds suggests that these modifiers may function independently of motile cilia. Current efforts involve identification of these hydrocephalus modifier genes and their role in brain development or physiology.
