The Blazer-Yost laboratory is characterizing a genetic (Meckel-Gruber III) rat model that exhibits both severe (homozygous) and mild (heterozygous) hydrocephalus. We are using the model to do preclinical testing with a class of compounds that appears to be effective in the treatment of hydrocephalus by altering transepithelial ion transport across the choroid plexus. We are also characterizing a choroid plexus cell line in order to perform mechanistic studies using electrophysiological techniques.
